Kim Dale recently completed her first Half Ironman in Canberra and has very kindly shared her report with us all. The race was a fantastic success for the Piranhas with some fantastic times and massive PBs. Special mention to all the first timers and to Laura Wolfson who won her age group. Amazingly everyone broke the magical 6 hour mark!!! a
If you have ever considered doing a longer triathlon please read below.
Kim’s Report on how her day went
Race Report Canberra 70.3
After months of preparation and nerves the big day was drawing near, but first some retail therapy! Kim, Andrew, Tony, Dani, Frank, Spike and Laura all met in Canberra on the 10th December to have a crack at the 70.3 Canberra Ironman. Simon, Christine, Scott, Sandy, Kyle and Bryce are all on hand as chief supporters. The old hands were very reassuring while us newbies flitted around looking at stalls, triple checking bikes before transition close and pretending that we were not scared at all! 5.30pm and transition has closed and the official race briefing begins. We are all corralled into the finishing shoot, jostling for a piece of shade. We listen intently making sure not a single rule goes un noticed.
4.30am and the alarm goes off, I jump out of bed, straight to the shower, get dressed, breaky – follow your normal routine. We all meet up in the eary darkness at lake burley griffin, nerves a plenty and so was the line up for the porta loo’s……………but could I be so lucky I spy three loos off into the distance without a line up and I sprint my way down………..now everything has been taken care of. We head back to transition and lay out the gear, gels, bars, socks, shoes and let’s take that great advice of Tony Syme and put shoes and socks in a plastic bag under the towel just in case it rains!
Transition closes, time to wetsuit up and hit the warm up but not before some pre race photos. We all wish one another good luck and head about our race prep. Myself, Danni and Laura were the first starters. I did not want to do a Jess at Shepparton and all most miss the race start so I hit the water and started the warm up. The gods could not have been nicer, the water was calm and flat and the rays of sunshine poking through the clouds. I took a moment as the swans swam by and the pro’s started to reflect on what was about to be achieved today. I was extremely proud of myself and fellow team mates. Then a booming “Goodluck Kim” came from the crowd, I thought this surely could not be for me but when I turned I saw Spike waving from the shore line. His race time was still 30mins away. What a buzz! I positioned myself away from the main bunch just hoping to get a clean start. Bang – and we are away. The swim is text book and I can not ask for a better start. The last 200mtrs seemed to take forever and the heavens opened up. The rain started as we were exiting the water. I tried to kick hard to get the blood back in the legs but not hard enough as I tripped up the step and gave the crowd a reason to gasp. The attendant just says “ I told you to lift your feet and watch the step”.

The swim was choppy and heavy with rain for those who started after 6.30am.
Into transition and it was time to face Coppins crossing, the rain was pouring and I was nervous heading out. The front end of the course is hilly and unrelenting; it is not till the second half when you feel like your legs are having a small rest. Driving this course does not do it justice.
Lap one feeling great, saw some friendly cheering faces and that spurs you on. Simon was on course taking some pictures and giving encouragement with his big booming smile. LAP 2 was another story, my muscles started to get cold and I was starting to struggle. When ladies who looked to be in there 50’s started passing me and saying” its a tough day isn’t”, I knew I was in trouble. The rain had stopped by the end of lap two and the sun was starting to come out. I hadn’t seen any piranhas but that was about to change. Danni passed me into lap three and she gave me the encouragement to keep slogging it out and someone to catch. However the little pocket rocket steamed her way up those hills and left me in her wake. I thought about my team mates and wondered what type of race they are having. The pros had lapped me and the sound of zipp and disc wheels approaching was constant. Some nice looking leg muscles and bums as well!! I could not believe the amount of punctures on course I was praying this would not happen to me.
I was glad to see the end of lap three. The sun was hot and it was time to head into transition.

The Run
I was so glad to have taken Tony’s advice as there were dry shoes and socks waiting for me in transition- yippee! I was so excited the last leg, I grabbed my food had a quick drink and off I went. Simon was there again to capture the moment, he just keeps popping up around the course. Funny that as I was about 1km into my run I heard the first pro finishing! ABSOLUTE FREAKS!! The legs took a while to find there rhythm but it was nice to look around and take in the surroundings. On the run I saw everyone and it was a thrill to see so many piranhas doing well especially Miss Laura Wolfson, I cheered loudly for her and she gave her trademark smile and looked like she was doing it with ease. People are so encouraging and the volunteers amazing. Lap one down and I felt great I came back past my family and supporters and told them to head to the finishers shoot, one last high five to my boys and I headed into the last 10kms. At the 13km mark I saw Laura and Tony, Mark and Frank heading into the final couple of kms. What a great effort. Frank is always full of encouragement. I see my training buddy Andrew and another high five on the course. He is running well. This lifts your spirits and you are off again. The back end of the course and there is a nasty little climb which really sorts you out, the legs are screaming and the energy is zapped. At this point I was thinking sure have some coke it may help and some lollies and why not some Endura to top up with. Just get home! The final five and it starts spitting again, this is a welcome relief from the sun. I am almost home. The last km and it starts pouring but you don’t really notice, the adrenalin kicks in and you run like’ Forrest’ all the way to the finish line, high fives to the family down the shoot and you hear your name over the loud speaker and I can’t believe it’s done.

Quite a few Piranhas will be racing at Canberra for the Half Ironman. Ian Crafter has done their estimated time and their handicaps for the famous “Le Mug”.
Tony “Warhorse” Syme
5:10
0:00:00
Big Tone is off scratch and with good reason. Is racing particularly well and would be a good bet. This old warhorse loves to race and will be looking to push hard in the middle stages.
Mark “The Boxer” Delaney
5:16
0:06:00
No surprises to see Mark up high in the handicaps although it is his first race. Big and strong and isnt carrying much weight. Loves to chase from the middle of the pack after the first leg but will push to the front by the middle of the race.
Laura “Miss Giggles” Wolfson
5:19
0:09:00
Surprised to see Laura ahead of stable mate “Flash” Ostini. A noted sprinter, I think everyone is interested how she goes at the longer distances. Would be no shock to see her win this however.
Frank “Flash” Ostini
5:28
0:18:00
The Flash is looking good. Has done the course before although a damp track didnt suit and will relish the drier conditions. Easy to spot in his multi colour silks.
Brad “Quiet Assassin” Robins
5:30
0:20:00
A proven performer. Last start was at Port Macquarie where he did shine. Been on a good paddock with limited preparation according to his trainer. I’m not so sure, been looking particular good in barrier draws and wouldnt be surprised if he gets the money.
Michael “Spike” Thornhill
5:41
0:31:00
Never discount an old stayer like The Spike. Has suffered several injuries but seems to be in good form. Has been working particular hard in training. Not a good starter in the water but will come home strong in the last two legs.
Kim “Maggie” Dale
5:45
0:35:00
People have dub this young fillie “Maggie” in reference to the Iron Lady Maggie Thatcher. First time at this distance so would be worth an each way bet. Maggie will have support crew there to push her on. Expect a big finish to ensure she beats her big rival.
Andrew “Mr Big” Holmes
5:51
0:41:00
Bit of a dark horse here. Has a new steed and will be looking to get out of the water for a ride. Another first timer to the distance and trainer has decided to put the blinkers on for this race. Steely focused and will be chasing local horse “Maggie” for line honours.
Danni “Bubbles” Syme
6:05
0:55:00
Proven stayer at this distance. Is hoping for drier conditions this time round. Will start particular well. To win she will need to hold form and finish strong in the “run” to home.

Despite being down on numbers Orange had a very successful interclub at Bathurst on Sunday. From our 32 piranhas competing we managed to get 225 points to lead the day with Mudgee still very competitive with 160 points and Bathurst 114 (unofficial results).
Mudgee still lead with 466 points to Orange 410 and it is obvious that our great rivals are not going to just give us the Interclub title this year. Next race is at Cowra on the 18th December.
Our girls despite missing the Wolfson ladies still dominated with the Wonder Mel Ashton Garrad coming out of retirement to help the Piranhas. It was great to see Mel racing and we really appreciate it. She had a wonderful battle with Jess Richards and overtook Jess with 400m to go. Kim Dale continues to improve and was 4th across the line. Estell Dean was 5th in a great race with Danielle Syme finishing soon after. Great to see our junior girls Katie Strike and Steph Harrison go so well. Also a big thank you and congratulations to Alison Kittel and Melissa Fogarty who made their Interclub and in Melissa case Triathlon debut on Sunday. They earned 8 and 5 points for the club so a very valuable effort.
In the Mens Kieren Syme had an amazing bike leg to come second. Everyone in club is amazed at the speed he possess and it was wonderful to see him on the podium. Tristan Harrison was solid to finish third. Matt Dean, Brian Kennelly, Mark Delaney, Dave Selwood and Tony Syme were all very close behind.
Age Groups:
Katie Strike 2nd in under 18
Mel Ashton-Garra, Jess Richard, Kim Dale 1st,2nd, 3rd in 30-39
Cas Ingham 3rd in 50 – 59
Kieren Syme 1st in under 18
Tristan Harrison, Dave Selwood 2nd and 3rd in 20 -29
Matt Dean 1st in 30-39
Tony Syme 3rd in 40-49
Mark Delaney 1st in 50-59
Brian Kennelly and Wayne Stewart 1st and 2nd in 60+

Shepparton Ironman 70.3 2011
Way too early for a Sunday morning there was a busload of nervous Piranhas making their way to Kialla Lakes, which was to become the first and last part of a long day of racing. It was already clear that we were a long way from Orange as we wandered around at 5am in shorts and without jumpers. As soon as we arrived we made our way through the sea of other athletes to get numbered and then dispersed to our own little place in transition to set up for the day. Some managed to split their drink bottles and lose some of their nutrition before the race started, whilst others didn’t bring theirs at all. The rest of us got ourselves organised and headed to another tri clubs nice green mat to start to psyche ourselves up, or at least try to squeeze ourselves into our wetsuits. Because we all know how good we look in tight black rubber we decided to quickly(?) fit in a group photo before race start. I haven’t seen the photo and I am sure it will bring back good memories, but it nearly cost me my swim start!
Swim 1.9km
The swim was one and a half laps around the lake, so we all had to walk around to the other side of the lake to start the race. I didn’t enjoy walking along one end and seeing all the purple swim caps lining up across the lake between the start cones…. Yes, Shep, we all know how important race prep is – so my warmup was a quick run round the lake and hearing the hooter as I put my goggles on and swam off in the first swim wave of the day. That horrible feeling of being tossed and turned in a washing machine never seems to change. I hope everyone else had a better start!! I know Dugald did as he represented the piranhas well in the water and had an amazing swim. He was out of the water in less than half an hour – wow! Lyn also had no trouble in the water, getting out in third place in her age group. Obviously no nerves were worrying Lyn in her first half ironman race, nor the 1000 or so other competitors fighting the water with her. Pete Gilchrist also smashed the swim in 35 minutes in his 1st half ironman. Tony and Dan M also blitzed the swim. Ian took almost 5mins off his swim time here from last year – nice work! Simon should have been pretty happy to get out of the water in 40mins too, all the hard training has obviously paid off with that great swim time.

Ride 90km
With a brief (or for some, extended; hey Simon!) transition we next headed out on the ride. The ride was a flat 2 lap course that somehow seemed to lengthen a little somewhere on the 2nd lap, as I am sure it was further the 2nd time round. Nonethless, it was Dugald once again that showed everyone how to ride. He smashed it in under 2.5 hrs. Pete and Tony also did pretty amazing splits in around 2hrs 40mins. Ian, Dan B, Phil, Dan M and Aidan all made the magical 3hr barrier meaning they rode the whole 90km with an average speed faster than 30km/hr. That’s pretty impressive when you think this was only one leg out of three, great work guys. So Aidan, maybe you don’t need to train to get a decent split on the bike afterall!! The wind was reasonably strong out on the bike course but it didn’t slow Lyn and Simon who conquered the 90km easily. A big congrats must go to Cas though who fought the wind and still managed to get under her 4hr goal.

Run 21.1km
The legs are hurting, the sun is out and hours have gone by since the race started, but this is where the rookie Phil shone. He obviously had plenty of energy left in the tank, being the only piranha able to run under 2hrs for the three lap run course. He was able to catch Pete just prior to the finish chute, so they completed their first HIMs together. I believe there may have been a little jostling before the decision was made to just cross the line together! Whilst these two seemingly flew around the run course, it was this leg where most of the old hands came undone. I believe there are a few craters on this course as well as fertilised plants, full portaloos and other items that will remain unnamed. It seems the heat and humidity may have played a part in destroying some of their races from here. Ian didn’t seem to fall victim to any of these issues with a great run just over 2hrs. He is certainly ready for his 2nd ironman in a few weeks time.
The most determination and courage came from Cas though. Cas had already been out there for 4.5 hrs before beginning her half marathon campaign to finish off the event. Everyone was with Cas in spirit (and Brett was there all the way on the bike) but we were all too exhausted to join her on course…. Except for Dan B. Having forgotten his nutrition for the bike AND run Dan had an incredible run to still finish 2nd out of the Piranhas. Even though he was feeling the effects of the long day he grabbed his bike and went out to bring Cas home. I did hear Cas mention the cat-o-nine tails from Dan, but whether that is true or not she pulled out an amazing last run leg and flew home to cross the line in front of the rest of the Piranhas who had been watching the clock and urging her on. You made it Cas and we could see the relief and joy by the massive smile as you crossed that line. It looked like you could have kept going with the energy that was visible there!!

Total
I have got to say it was definitely the rookies outshining the old hands in this race. Every one of them had a brilliant race and should feel so happy with their achievements. Something crossed off the bucket list maybe???!! Congrats to all the experienced Piranhas too as we all started the course knowing it would be a long day and all have another half ironman title to our names. It was a tough day out there are through sheer grit and determination every single Piranha made it home safely to get that well earned towel and medal placed around their neck! Shepparton was a great course and I am sure some will be back to challenge it again next year.

Thank you to Jeanette, Mick and the Tudor, Gilchrist and Simmons families for their support over the entire weekend. A massive thank you must also be given to Brett who spent almost as much energy as us popping up all around the course to cheer us on and give us motivation to keep going. It was really appreciated. I think we all owed him some beers for getting us through the race, but he provided that too just to top off an absolutely wonderful day.
